Substance found on Monroe property nonhazardous

MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) – Authorities now know the substance found on a Monroe property that has led to the deaths of several animals.

On May 3, a dead racoon and groundhog were lying in a suspected toxic or hazardous material. Since then, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality checked it out and deemed the substance nonhazardous.

Controlled burn causing cloud of smoke in Monroe County

NEWPORT, MI (Toledo News Now) – A controlled burn is causing a large plume of black smoke in Monroe County.

According to Monroe County Central Dispatch, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is conducting a controlled burn at the Pointe Mouille State Game Area just north of Newport.

Area residents should not be alarmed as the fire is under control.

Construction causing delays in southern Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY, MI - Construction in Monroe County is causing
delays for drivers.

Two of three lanes on I-75 between the Ohio/Michigan line
and the Laplaisance Rd. Exit are closed.  That's about 12 miles.

Drivers have been frustrated.  "It's a little
challenging. We saw some cars going off the ramp the opposite direction. Almost
got into an accident," said one driver.

The barrels are expected to be removed by Sunday at 6:00pm.

Monroe County Sheriff to retire after 16 years

MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) – Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield announced he will not seek a fifth term as sheriff Friday.

In a statement Crutchfield said the decision to retire was a difficult one.  Crutchfield says he made the decision now in order to give plenty of time for other candidates to make the decision to run. 

"I wish all of the candidates the very best and pray the voters will make their selection carefully," Crutchfield said in a statement.

Substance found on Monroe property killing animals

MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) – A substance found on a Monroe property has led to the deaths of several animals.

Lisa Cosby and Danny Lovett say there was a black oil or tar-like substance leaking from a large tank on the land adjacent to their property, and there were dead animals in it.

Unfortunately, before our crew could get to the tank, an associate of Homrich Incorporated told them they were not allowed on the property.

The images of a racoon and groundhog in the substance that were able to be captured are disturbing.

Monroe County votes on library levy

BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI (Toledo News Now) – It has been 8 years since Monroe County voters have voted on a library levy, but it will be time for a new one soon, because more people are using the libraries than ever before.

Some library users are pleased about the free access to the newspaper, and others come in for the computers. Administrators at the Monroe Public Library Systems say computer logins are three times higher than last year.
